Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale got off to a strong start on the opening day of the four-day sale with MV Magnier going to 275,000 guineas to secure the HIGH CHAPARRAL colt out of MIDDLE PERSIA. The turnover on the opening session was up 29% to 8,980,500 guineas on the corresponding session last year for the 194 lots sold, whilst the average and median rose 22% and 27% respectively to 46,291 guineas and 38,000 guineas.

The top price on the opening day of Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale came before lunchtime when MV Magnier signed for the colt by HIGH CHAPARRAL out of the DALAKHANI mare MIDDLE PERSIA for 275,000 guineas after seeing off a plethora of agents including Peter Doyle, Paul Moroney, Antony Stroud and Dwayne Woods.

"He is a very good-looking horse and we've been lucky with the family," said Magnier. "High Chap has been doing well lately. We've seen plenty of nice horses here this week."

The "lucky" family includes the second dam MASSARA, bought by MV in 2009 from Prince Faisal for 600,000gns after she produced NAYARRA (CAPE CROSS), who was subsequently a champion two-year-old filly in Italy, and winner of the Premio Gran Criterium (G1) for Faisal.

For the "Massarra Syndicate", she has produced WONDERFULLY (GALILEO), winner of the Silver Flash Stakes (G3), and MARS, third in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

This colt was consigned by Lady Chryss O'Reilly's Castlemartin Stud and is the highest-priced horse to sell at October Book 2 since 2008.

Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold had to go to 180,000 guineas to secure the KYLLACHY colt out of the MEDICEAN mare NAIZAK consigned by his breeder Bumble Mitchell after seeing off Fawzi Nass, stood alongside agent Oliver St Lawrence.

"Of the horses I have seen so far, he was my pick," said Gold. "He is a lovely horse, he showed himself off beautifully and Bumble always does such a good job with her horses. We paid a little more than we had planned."

Bumble Mitchell was all smiles after the sale. "There are three of us involved and we bred the mare out of Sunny Davis. Kyllachy is a reliable sire, who works well with the dam sire Medicean. This colt has always been my favourite, right from a foal."

Ross Doyle had to go to 170,000 guineas to secure the LAWMAN colt out of the FASLIYEV mare ON MY KNESS consigned from Baroda & Colbinstown Studs despite stiff opposition from Australian agent Jeff Gordon.

"He's a lovely colt, by a stallion we're mad about," said Doyle.

"Richard [Hannon] loves them by Lawman, and this colt is a good physical, has a good walk and a great temperament - like all by the stallion. He never turned a hair whenever we saw him.

The sale represented a huge pinhooking success for David Cox and David Myerscough’s Kildare based operation after they bought the colt as a foal for just 35,000 guineas through Mick Flanagan’s Townley Hall Bloodstock at the 2012 Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

It was at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale last year that trainer George Margarson and agent Armando Duarte purchased the subsequent dual Group 2 winning two-year-old LUCKY KRISTALE and the pair will be hoping to repeat that success after the purchase of the IFFRAAJ filly out of PRINCESS SPEEDFIT for 150,000 guineas.

"It is a family I know well and she is the nicest from the family that I have seen since Imperial Guest and Excellent Guest," said Margarson. "It is for John Guest Racing - she looks the part, let's hope we can "do" a Lucky Kristale again!"

The IFFRAAJ filly is from Ringfort Stud and is out of the DESERT PRINCE mare  PRINCESS SPEEDFIT, the dam of the two other "Guest" horses.

Late in the evening Ross Doyle secured the TEOFILO half-brother to the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera winner KINNAIRD for 170,000 guineas after seeing off Rabbah Bloodstock’s Jono Mills to secure the Victor Stud consigned colt. The pedigree of the son of the BE MY GUEST mare RIBOT’S GUEST has had a major catalogue update recently courtesy of KINNAIRD’s son BERKSHIRE who added victory in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes to his Royal Ascot Chesham Stakes win.

Day 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 continues at 10.30am on Tuesday, October 15.
