Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continued in record-breaking fashion on the third day with no fewer than 19 lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more, taking the number of six-figure lots for the sale to 50, two more than last year with a day still remaining. The third day saw a total of 196 lots sold for 10,009,000 guineas, at an average or 51,066 guineas and a median of 40,000 guineas. All three measures represented major increases on the corresponding day in 2012, with the turnover up 31%, the average up 27% and the median up 19%. Once again the clearance rate was a feature of the trade, this time at a remarkable 90%.

Late in the evening the MOTIVATOR filly consigned by Bumble Mitchell on behalf of The Kathryn Stud lit up the ring when being knocked down to Ross Doyle for 320,000 guineas after he saw off a determined bid by Hugo Lascelles. The filly is out of the OLDEN TIMES mare ELEGANT BEAUTY who is a half-sister to the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and St James’s Palace Stakes winner GRAND LODGE and it was that horse’s trainer William Jarvis who made much of the early running before Doyle and Lascelles took the baton. The price represents the second highest for a filly at Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale and the highest price since 2008.

"She is a beautiful looking filly," said Doyle, "a very nice filly, I loved her. She is quite racey and might be a mid-season two-year-old. She is very easy on the eye and from a great family."

Fergus Anstock of The Kathyrn Stud said: "The mare was bought by Jeremy Brummitt carrying this filly - as usual Jeremy has got it right. Elegant Beauty is a lovely mare and this was always a lovely filly.”

The top lot for much of the third day had been the DUTCH ART colt out of SEPTIEME CIEL mare BROOKLYN’S SKY. Consigned from Rory Mahon’s Mountain View Stud, the colt was knocked down to International Irish showjumper Brian Cassidy  for 270,000 guineas after he saw off the efforts of Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold.

"I've had a few point-to-pointers before," he said, "but this is my first foray into Flat ownership. The colt will go to Paul Carberry to be broken-in, a trainer has not been decided yet. He is for myself, though I might syndicate him too.

"He is a lovely horse, and has a great attitude, he really stood out to me. He has a nice pedigree and should be ready to go as a two-year-old."

The sale represented a massive pinhooking triumph for his owners, having been bought at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 40,000 guineas last year by Michael Fitzpatrick’s JC Bloodstock.

Fitzpatrick also enjoyed success consigning under his own banner of Kilminfoyle House Stud with another son of DUTCH ART. The son of the COMMON GROUNDS mare COMMON CONSENT was knocked down to The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Mark Richards for 150,000 guineas.

"I've had to be patient the last two days," said Richards. "It was hard to find the horse to suit me, there were plenty with staying pedigrees here not so many sharper types.

"But this chap looked a real athlete, he should be fast and Dutch Arts should suit Hong Kong - the only one I have bought so far won a griffin race earlier this year."

The colt was purchased by Michael Fitzpatrick's JC Bloodstock for 31,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Another vendor to achieve a great pinhooking result was Gay O’Callaghan’s Yeomanstown Stud who sold the EXCEED AND EXCEL colt out of the FORZANDO mare DEAREST DAISY for 200,000 guineas. Former jockey Philip Robinson, standing alongside Armando Duarte made the winning bid with Shadwell Estates’ Angus Gold again coming off second best.

"We've no plans with him as yet," said Robinson. "In the immediate future he'll go to George Margarson. I just thought he was a nice type, everything in the right place, let's hope he has an engine!"

The colt was purchased by O’Callaghan for just 65,000 guineas at last year’s 2012 Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Early in the day Ross Doyle went to 150,000 guineas to secure the MORE THAN READY colt out of the EVENT OF THE YEAR mare B BERRY BRANDY, consigned from Chris Wright’s Stratford Place Stud.

Wright has a long association with the colt's family as he explained.

"I bought the third dam Team Colors, and we sold her Silver Hawk daughter Helwa, but subsequently bought her back. Unfortunately, she died of a heart attack in the paddock - it was even more gutting as her Rahy colt Strong Suit then went and won his Newbury maiden with ease.

"So we set about finding another relation and found B Berry Brandy somewhere like Arkansas in the US. We kept her Bob And John foal - he is Cricklewood Green and has won twice from two starts, beating two subsequent Group performers," said Wright, adding: "We sent her to More Than Ready because he is such a good sire. We haven't had much to sell from the farm this year - I wish we'd had more in this market!"

Richard Hannon, who currently trains CRICKLEWOOD GREEN and trained STRONG SUIT, is set to take possession of the colt at his East Everleigh base.

The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 concludes with the fourth and final session starting at 10.30 on Thursday, October 17.
