New Street Tops Second Day of Tattersalls July Sale

Wildcard lots dominated the second day of the Tattersalls July Sale, filling four of the top five prices for the day but it was the three-year-old colt NEW STREET who topped proceeding’s at 185,000 guineas. Trade continued in robust fashion, with the clearance rate at a remarkable 95%. A total of 160 lots were sold for 2,834,200 guineas, a rise of 25% whilst the median rose 11% to 10,000 guineas and the average was slightly down at 17,714 guineas.

NEW STREET became the top lot of the sale when he was knocked down to agent Bobby O’Ryan for 185,000 guineas. The son of ACCLAMATION is set to go jumping after being purchased by O’Ryan on behalf of owner James Smith and trainer Jim Best.

"He's a lovely horse," said O'Ryan, "whom I know well. He's a sound lovely type - everything about him is right. I hope he can go on and do what we want."

"We'd hope he can become a Triumph Hurdle type, he's got a bit of size," said Best.

The leading Wildcard lot on the second day of was BRENDAN BRACKAN who was purchased by David Redvers on behalf of Sheikh Fahad for 145,000 guineas. The Group winning son of BIG BAD BOB is set to return to Ireland and Ger Lyons's Glenburnie Stables.

"Ger was keen to keep the horse," said Redvers. "Sheikh Fahad can see the value in buying a horse in training.

"Brendan Bracken is a tough, sound, consistent horse who runs at a high level. It did not appear that he suited Dubai in the winter, but a return trip might be considered in future."

The third horse to break the six figure barrier on the second day was the two-year-old filly KO CACHE. The two-time winning daughter of KODIAC was most recently seen when running admirably in the Group 2 Queen Mary and was knocked down to Bahraini owner and breeder Hussain Ali Bukannan.

"There is a good programme for fillies in Qatar," said Zuhair Mohsen, the filly's future trainer. "Mr Bukannan bought Peter Mac here last year and he won Bu Samra Cup in March.

"The eventual plan will be to breed from Ko Cache - Mr Bukannan has mares in Britain."

Qatari trainer Gassim Ghazali has been very active during the July Sale, signing for more than 40 horses so far including the two-year-old colts STEVIE’S WONDER and FUGLEMAN for 85,000 guineas and 75,000 guineas respectively. STEVIE’S WONDER, by ART CONNOISSEUR out of the SOVIET STAR mare OUR JO JO, was second at his only start at The Curragh behind the highly regarded Ballydoyle trained GLENEAGLES for owner and trainer John Hayden.

Ghazali also signed for the FAST COMPANY colt FUGLEMAN who was consigned from Ben Haslam’s Castle Hill Stables. The Middleham Park Racing owned colt was an impressive winner of his only start at Carlisle.
