The Tattersalls year concluded with a competitive final session of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale that saw 141 lots sold for 1,055,900 guineas at an average of 7,489 guineas and a median of 5,700 guineas. The four-day December Mare Sale saw 685 lots sell for 48,290,695 guineas at an average of 70,497 guineas and a median of 26,000 guineas whilst the two-week December Sale saw turnover of 84,975,295 guineas. Turnover at Tattersalls for 2014 was a record 263,411,173 guineas, up 6% on last year’s record turnover.

The top lot on the final day was the Listed placed BALAAGHA who was knocked down to Jim Ryan for 55,000 guineas. The daughter of MR GREELEY was consigned to the sale by Shadwell Stud with a covering by MAWATHEEQ.

"She's been bought to go to Dragon Pulse," said Ryan of Milltown Stud.

"She is by Mr Greeley, who is such a good broodmare sire, and she was a good runner - her Listed form reads very well as she finished behind Strawberrydaiquiri.

"The dragon Pulse foals are good walkers, nice foals."

At the conclusion of the 2014 Tattersalls December Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“Record annual turnover for the second consecutive year and the highest price for a thoroughbred at public auction anywhere in the world in 2014 brings the Tattersalls year to a successful conclusion. Our turnover for the year has risen from 248 million guineas last year to 263 million guineas in 2014 and the 4.5 million guineas sale of the outstanding Classic winner JUST THE JUDGE was a wonderful way to bring the Tattersalls sales season to an end. The annual figures reflect not only the sustained demand for European bloodstock at all levels of the market, but also the quality of the stock which consignors from Britain, Ireland and further afield have sent to Tattersalls throughout the year. Quality is the key and we continue to present the finest that Europe has to offer in all sectors of the market.

“As well as a new high for annual turnover, 2014 has seen unprecedented demand at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale and also at last week’s Tattersalls December Foal Sale. More than 130 million guineas has been spent on yearlings at Tattersalls this year and the sometimes extraordinary level of trade has yet again shown Tattersalls to be the focal point for so many of the world’s leading buyers. The best of British and Irish bloodstock has consistently attracted a global cast of buyers to all of our sales in 2014, culminating in another truly international renewal of the December Sale.

“It would be fair to say that this year’s December Mares catalogue lacked the depth and quality which produced such spectacular returns in 2013, and the figures across the board reflect this, but a new British record for a filly in training, three seven figure transactions and international demand from start to finish have produced turnover which has only been bettered once since 2008. While the individual highlight of JUST THE JUDGE’s record breaking sale will sit proudly in the December Sale annals, it is the top ten lots which truly encapsulate the essence of the sale. These ten outstanding thoroughbreds were sold by British, Irish and French consignors to buyers from Britain, China, Dubai, Ireland, Japan, Kuwait, New Zealand, Qatar and the USA. The bloodstock industry is almost uniquely global and nowhere is this demonstrated more vividly than at the Tattersalls December Sale."

The next sale at Tattersalls is the February Sale that takes place on February 5 – 6. Entries are now being taken and can be made online at www.tattersalls.com.
