Royal Ascot to Remember for Tattersalls Graduates
Tattersalls graduates enjoyed a spectacular Royal Ascot winning fourteen races in total, more than all other European sales companies combined. Four of those victories came at Group 1 level and seven were graduates of Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, Europe’s premier yearling sale. It is also worth noting that Tattersalls were the only sales company in Britain/Ireland whose yearling graduates won any of the two-year-old races with three of the six juvenile events at the five-day meeting won by October Yearling Sale graduates.
The opening day of the Royal Meeting saw the OASIS DREAM gelding PROHIBIT break through for his first win at Group level when winning the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes. Having been a model of consistency over the past few months, few could begrudge the son of OASIS DREAM or trainer Robert Cowell their success and he became the fifth Group 1 winner in 10 months for graduates of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, where he was bought for 85,000 guineas in 2009.
Juddmonte stallion OASIS DREAM remained in the spotlight the following race when his son POWER maintained his unbeaten record when taking out the Group 2 Coventry Stakes for the Coolmore team. Out of the mare FRAPPE, POWER was bought privately at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 50,000 guineas and is now favourite for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.
The second day of Royal Ascot saw the most exciting race for the meeting in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes with Godolphin’s REWILDING running down the gallant SO YOU THINK in the shadows of the post with the pair drawing away from their rivals. REWILDING is the last foal of the great mare DARARA and was bought at Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale for 500,000 guineas. The son of TIGER HILL, who was consigned by Watership Down Stud, is her fourth Group 1 winner.
FAME AND GLORY recorded his fourth Group 1 victory when running away with the Gold Cup on the third day of the meeting. The son of MONTJEU has won at the highest level for three consecutive years now and such was the ease of his victory that it is not inconceivable that he may try to emulate his former stablemate YEATS who recorded an unparalleled four victories in the race. FAME AND GLORY was purchased by Tim Hyde at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 190,000 guineas from the consignment of Kirsten Rausing’s St Simon Stud.
The fourth day saw a Group double for Book 1 graduates with SAMITAR successful for Mick Channon in the Group 3 Albany Stakes and NAMIBIAN winning the Group 3 Queen’s Vase for Mark Johnston. Both were a perfect illustration of the value that can be found at Europe’s premier yearling sale, with SAMITAR having been purchased by Gill Richardson for 39,000 guineas and NAMIBIAN by Mark Johnston for 60,000 guineas.
The final day of what looked a vintage Royal Meeting saw the James Fanshawe trained SOCIETY ROCK win the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes ahead of MONSIEUR CHEVALIER for a Tattersalls 1-2. SOCIETY ROCK was knocked down to BBA Ireland for 75,000 guineas at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale before later being bought privately by Anthony Stroud at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale whilst MONSIEUR CHEVALIER was a graduate of Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale where he was purchased for 17,000 guineas.
