Tattersalls’ headline sponsorship of Irish Guineas Weekend at the all new Curragh Racecourse started on a high note when October Yearling Sale, Book 1 graduate PHOENIX OF SPAIN ran out a hugely impressive winner of the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas.

In what was a very strong renewal of the Classic, the Charlie Hills - trained son of LOPE DE VEGA recorded a three-length victory over last year’s Champion two-year-old TOO DARN HOT. The Tony Wechsler and Ann Plummer owned colt was building on his win in the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes as a two-year-old as well as notable runner up efforts in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes and the Group 1 Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes at the end of the season.

PHOENIX OF SPAIN was purchased at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock for 220,000 guineas from Michael Fitzpatrick’s Kilminfoyle House Stud. The grey colt was also purchased for 78,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale by Good Will Bloodstock from Newtown Stud, who consigned the colt on behalf of his breeder, the late Cherry Faeste of Tourgar Bloodstock.

The second graduate of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale to achieve Classic success on the weekend was the Mark Johnston trained MAIN EDITION who came out on top in the German 1000 Guineas at Dusseldorf.

Now a Classic winner, MAIN EDITION was adding to victories in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket as a two-year-old for owner Saif Ali.
