2010 October Yearling Sale Book 1 Day 2 Press Release
The progeny of Coolmore Stud’s leading stallion GALILEO again headed proceedings on the second day of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale with the top two yearlings being by the Derby winning son of SADLER’S WELLS. Trade during the second session stepped up from the opening day with 160 lots selling for 18,038,000 guineas, at an average of 112,738 guineas and a median of 71,000 guineas, figures that compared favourably with 2009. There were 29 lots that sold for 200,000 guineas or more, compared with 23 on this day in 2009.
The top priced lot for the day was lot 287, the GALILEO filly out of the DARSHAAN mare GWYNN who was knocked down to John Magnier for 900,000 guineas. The three-parts sister to Group 1 Prix de Diane second and Group 1 Irish Derby third GAGNOA was consigned from Timmy Hyde’s Camas Park Stud and caught the attention of agents Charlie Gordon-Watson and Hugo Lascelles, but both succumbed to the Coolmore principal. The sale price of 900,000 guineas is second only to yesterday’s session topping filly as the highest yearling price at Tattersalls since 2007.

There was no shortage of admirers or bidders for the GALILEO colt out of the Listed placed DARSHAAN colt INTRUGUED. Consigned by Prince Faisal Salman’s Denford Stud, the colt out of the half-sister to the Group 1 French 2,000 Guineas winner AUSSIE RULES saw Alex Cole, John Gosden and William Huntingdon all register bids. Eishin Farms’ Katsuhiko Hirai, who race the Japanese Derby winner Eishin Flash, made much of the running with agent Charlie Gordon-Watson and despite a late bid from Newmarket trainer William Haggas it was Gordon-Watson who prevailed.
Gordon-Watson said of his purchase: "You can't beat the page, it is all there. The colt is also bred on the Galileo/Darshaan cross, which has been so successful."
Andrew Tinkler, CEO of the Stobart Group – the transport and logistics giant, bought the third highest priced lot for the day when he had the GREEN DESERT filly out the SADLER’S WELLS mare MAGANDA knocked down to him for 450,000 guineas. The three-parts-sister to last year’s October 1 sale topper, the Group placed RUDOLF VALENTINO, was consigned from John Deer’s Oakgrove Stud and also caught the attention of underbidder Charlie Gordon-Watson. With two of the three days of Book 1 completed, Tinkler, who has been assisted by Brook Stud’s Dwayne Woods, has purchased 9 lots for 1,190,000 guineas.
Following the sale Oakgrove Stud’s farm manager Tim Lane admitted to some nerves beforehand: "I am relieved that is over!" he smiled after the sale, and still visably shaking with the pressure of consigning such a quality filly. “We did not think yesterday we would get to that, but today we have been very busy with vets and lookers. We drop some money in a hat and pitch in some prices and off the top of my head I said 400,000gns. I get to take the money home from the hat!".
