Derby Glory for Tattersalls October Yearling Purchase Desert Crown
280,000 guineas Tattersalls October Yearling purchase DESERT CROWN stormed to Derby glory to give veteran trainer Sir Michael Stoute his sixth victory in the world’s premier Classic.
The unbeaten son of NATHANIEL established himself as an outstanding Derby winner with a display of absolute authority under the guidance of jockey Richard Kingscote who has partnered the colt in all three of his lifetime starts. Easing effortlessly past toiling rivals with just over 2 furlongs to go, DESERT CROWN crossed the hallowed finish line a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths clear of runner up HOO YA MAL who was also purchased at the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
Purchased by Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock on behalf of owner Saeed Suhail, DESERT CROWN’s Derby procession was a massive triumph for his breeder Gary Robinson who sold the handsome colt at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale from his Strawberry Fields Stud which is situated not far from Newmarket. Hailing from the Juddmonte family of PROVISO and BYWORD, DESERT CROWN is the fifth foal and fifth winner out of Robinson’s winning GREEN DESERT mare DESERT BERRY, who has a yearling colt by STUDY OF MAN destined to appear at this year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
At 280,000 guineas, DESERT CROWN was the highest priced NATHANIEL yearling of his generation and his Derby win takes the Newsells Park Stud based stalwart’s tally of Classic/Group 1 winners to six. DESERT CROWN’s Epsom glory also continues the impressive run of 2022 Classic success for Tattersalls graduates following in the footsteps of 60,000 guineas Craven Breeze Up 1,000 Guineas winner CACHET and 210,000 guineas Craven Breeze Up Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas winner NATIVE TRAIL, who was also purchased for 67,000 guineas at Book 1 of the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
