Havana Grey Filly Sells for Record 200,000 Guineas on Opening Day of Tattersalls October Book 3
The records continued on the opening day of Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale with a HAVANA GREY filly setting a record price for filly at this fixture and three lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more. The impressive clearance rate seen at Books 1 and 2 of the October Yearling Sale continued with the opening session registering 88% of lots sold.
Havana Grey Filly Equals October Book 3 Record at 200,000 Guineas
The HAVANA GREY filly out of the INVASOR mare EALAAN matched the record price for a yearling at Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale when knocked down for 200,000 guineas to Alex Elliott on behalf of Amo Racing. Elliott secured the filly despite the efforts of Stroud Coleman’s Anthony Stroud and trainer Ed Crisford, seeking to repeat the success they have enjoyed with Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes winner ARABIAN DUSK, another Tattersalls sold HAVANA GREY filly who was bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud.
"She has been bought for Amo Racing and George Boughey will train. She is a standout horse in Book 3. I knew the breeze up guys would be in, and Anthony Stroud who bought Arabian Dusk at the breeze up. It is good to hear that at the same stage this filly is a better model than Arabian Dusk. She was the main target today," said Elliott, who was buying his 67th yearling at this year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
Ed Harper of Whitsbury Manor Stud, who bred and consigned the filly, said: "This is the last 'lower-priced' crop by Havana Grey so there are some mixed pedigrees out there, as you would expect, and we wanted to make sure he had a real proper one.
"We always liked her at home, but she is a late April foal and she has done so well, we did not expect her to do as well as she has and she did not look like a late-season foal. Alex and Amo and the team have been big supporters of the sire from early on - they just want to buy the best, and we brought her here hoping she was going to be the best in the sale."
Willie Browne Buys Blue Point Colt for 150,000 Guineas
Willie Browne, signing as JB Bloodstock, went to 150,000 guineas to secure the BLUE POINT colt out of Group 2 Balanchine Stakes second ANAHITA, who was sold by New England Stud.
"It was all breeze up money on this colt, but I think he is a good horse," said Browne. "The sire is very good, and I have had a good price for one by him before. For me this is the best horse here today - you are just trying to buy a quick horse if you can, and I think he looks quick."
Brown was part of the Oaks Farm Stables syndicate that pinhooked and sold the TERRITORIES colt who was sold at Book 2 for 750,000 guineas to Sumbe, having been bought for 65,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale.
"The Territories is a gorgeous horse, and it was a great result yesterday," reflected Brown. "That result was way above expectations - and the money has all been spent on this lad!"
Simmering’s Time Test Half-Brother Bound for Saudi Arabia
Another lot to breach the six-figure barrier was the TIME TEST half-brother to SIMMERING, Ollie Sangster’s Group 2 Prix du Calvados winner and Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes second, who was knocked down to Nico Archdale for 110,000 guineas on behalf of Najd Stud.
Nico Archdale commented: "He is a half to a very smart horse this year in Simmering, by a sire who does very well in Saudi, and he is a perfect physical. He goes to Saudi from here, and I am delighted to purchase him for Prince Faisal and Najd Stud."
Of the other Najd Stud purchases made this week, Archdale updated: "We bought another by Time Test in Book 1 [Lot 150], and seven yearlings in Book 2 - they are going to Saudi, apart from the Sea The Stars [Lot 748] colt who goes to Roger Varian.
"Time Test is doing very well out in Saudi, he is flying out there and has had a top rated two-year-old. It has been a very strong market here over the two weeks, there have been some lovely horses here."
Consigned by WH Bloodstock, the colt is out of the FASTNET ROCK mare CASHLA BAY and was bred by Lofts Hall Stud. Breeder Hugo Lascelles was at Tattersalls to see the sale and said: "Simmering has done us well this summer, she has been very well trained by Ollie Sangster. I am very pleased with that price, he is a very nice horse."
Granddam ROSE BLOSSOM, who was a Group 3 winner of the Summer Stakes at York, was bought by Hugo Lascelles Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2011 for 115,000 guineas.
Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continues on Friday, 18th October at 9.30am followed immediately by October Book 4.
