Pinatubo Colt Tops Second Day of October Book 3
First season sires were in demand on the second day of Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale with colts by PINATUBO and FAR ABOVE selling for 90,000 guineas and 70,000 guineas respectively.
Najd Stud Land Pinatubo Colt for 90,000 Guineas
Najd Stud’s Saud al Qahtani has been at Tattersalls for the entirety of the October Yearling Sale and added to his purchases on the second day of Book 3 when securing the PINATUBO colt out of ROYAL APPLAUSE mare ROYAL DEBT for 90,000 guineas.
The half-brother to Group 3 Sirenia Stakes winner MIGHTY GURKHA was consigned by Barton Stud and was the fifteenth yearling bought by Najd Stud this fortnight. There was plenty of interest in this colt from end users and breeze up consignors alike, but it was Najd who emerged as the successful purchaser with Johnny Collins the underbidder.
Consignor Tom Blain of Barton Stud said: "This colt was raised on the farm. The sire is going well, and they seem to improve a lot from foals to yearlings. I am delighted Najd Stud has bought him. We have six or seven left, and sold almost everything."
Tate Buys Far Above Colt for 70,000 Guineas
The second highest price for the day was 70,000 guineas for the FAR ABOVE colt from Luke Coen’s Q-Cross Stables, also the consignor of yesterday’s top priced filly by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. Out of the NEW APPROACH mare BITTERN, the colt hails from the family of Grade 1 Canadian International winner SARAH LYNX and Group 2 Park Hill Stakes winner MEEZNAH and is heading into training with James Tate, who trained his sire FAR ABOVE to win the Group 3 Palace House Stakes.
Tate, who was standing down the left-hand stairs, said: "He is a lovely horse, he reminds me very much of his father. He is good-sized, strong, he looks quick and he looked particularly good up here in the ring. I am looking forward to seeing if he can go as fast as his daddy!"
Tate has three yearlings by the sire in his stable and is not necessarily expecting an early two-year-old career from this colt, commenting: "We will see how it goes. Far Above showed me a lot as a juvenile, but he did not run as a two-year-old so we will just see how we go with this lad. I am sure he will be quick, and we are looking forward to breaking him in."
Tate's training situation has recently changed and he added: "We are now an open yard, for many years we exclusively trained for Rabbah Bloodstock but now can train for anyone. We had a nice winner for Heart Of The South Racing last month, and a recent winner for Baileys Horse Feeds. We are looking forward to training for anyone who will have us! We are buying horses on spec, and have sold some. It is a good opportunity and fun, it is an exciting new chapter."
Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continues at 9.30am on Saturday, 14th October followed immediately afterwards by Book 4.
