Strong International Trade At Tattersalls July Sale

The Tattersalls July Sale concluded with figures up across the board and the highest sale turnover since 2007. The final day saw a total of 137 lots sold for 2,266,900 guineas, a rise of 21%, whilst the average and median rose 18% and 42% to 16,547 guineas and 11,000 guineas respectively. As has been the case all week, the clearance rate was once again spectacular at 95%. The three day sale saw a total of 500 lots sold for 8,342,700 guineas which represented a rise of 20% on the 2013 sale. The average rose 4% to 16,685 guineas whilst the median rose 25% to 10,000 guineas. The clearance for the whole sale was 92%.

The top lot on the final day of the July Sale was the three-year-old gelding STARCHITECT who was knocked down to National Hunt trainer Donald McCain for 110,000 guineas.

“He’s a lovely big scopey sort and when he was up at the sales ring, he really pulled himself together, showed himself off and looked a lovely horse,” said McCain.

McCain bought the son of SEA THE STARS from Eddie Lynam’s Garretstown House Stables on behalf of Paul and Claire Rooney.

“He’s by a great sire, he goes on the soft and Table Rock, who beat him in a maiden in May, won the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.”

The draft from Juddmonte Farms is always a highlight of the July Sale and this year’s consignment saw 45 lots realise a total of 764,300 guineas. The top priced of these was the ZAMINDAR filly FLY PAST, out of the Group 2 winning SADLER’S WELLS mare DARING MISS, who was knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock’s Tom Goff for 80,000 guineas.

“We might try and win a race with her before she goes to stud,” said Goff, who bought her on behalf of an Irish client. “Apparently the mare’s two-year-old, also by Zamindar, is looking useful and this filly showed plenty of speed at home. She is a great model and from a lovely family.”

Another filly that attracted plenty of attention was the three-year-old DANSILI filly FRANGIPANNI. The daughter of the Group 1 July Cup winner FRIZZANTE was consigned from Roger Charlton’s Beckhampton House Stables and was knocked down to agent Anthony Stroud for 78,000 guineas.

“She’s been bought on behalf of a friend, an English breeder, as a broodmare prospect,” reported Stroud. “I am not sure of the plan yet, but he might put her back into training.”

At the conclusion of the 2014 Tattersalls July Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“Last year’s Tattersalls July Sale produced a 46% rise in turnover, a 35% rise in average and a 23% rise in median and this year’s renewal has again recorded significant gains across the board. Turnover in excess of 8 million guineas is the third highest ever at the July Sale and all of the key indicators have reached their highest levels since 2007.

“As so often at Tattersalls sales of this nature, the real feature has been the extraordinary level of international participation. Buyers from more than 20 different countries have all contributed to a sale of enormous strength and depth and a remarkable clearance rate in excess of 90%. In particular, our loyal supporters from throughout the Gulf region have yet again played a huge part in the success of the sale, both as vendors and purchasers, and the strong demand for well bred fillies and mares is a clear indication of a market which continues to gain in confidence.”
